Blog 6: Brain Myths and Truths

The brain is the organ that makes us think, feel, desire and action. It is the seat of many different actions, both conscious and unconscious, allowing us to respond to a changing world and that demand fast, accurate answers.

The brain is an organ of the nervous system rich in neurons with specialized functions constitute the largest part of the brain. It is divided into two hemispheres or halves, called cerebral hemispheres. Areas within the cerebrum control muscle functions and also control speech, thought, emotion, reading, writing and learning.

Man is, of all mammals one whose brain development reaches a higher level. Its weight is generally of 1,160 grams for her man's brain and 1,000 grams for the woman's brain.

Functional and morphological differences between male and female brain. The male brain is larger, for example, and as regards language, the relevant areas of the brain are more active in women. But determining what these mean differences is extremely difficult. No study to date has shown gender-specific processes involved in the construction of neural networks for learning, which is another candidate for further investigation.

The terms "female brain" and "male brain" refers to "ways of being" described in cognitive terms rather than a biological reality. We use 'male and female brain "terms to refer to specific cognitive profile, which is an unfortunate choice of terminology if it contributes to distorted ideas about the functioning of the brain.
In the brain there is a huge network of neurons "calculators" or hidden that perform the necessary computation. In this way similar, an artificial neural network censors must be composed of mechanical or electrical.

The difference between the brain and the computer is that man needs a data processing system multipurpose capable of treating large amounts of information very differently and in a very short time and with more practical sense (but not necessarily accurate)to be acted upon immediately. Computers, however, are highly specialized ability to accurately process very specific information (in principle only numbers) by following instructions. It is true that both have memory capacity in the human memory is associative and do not know where it is stored, however the computer is stored in memory locations of direct access by sub. But in the human brain the main difference is the perception of things compared co a machine, which is totally objective and logical in its operation, however we operate according to our experiences, thoughts, feelings and emotions, which is why we differ so much.
With regard to the presentation, I find that it was a clear instance where some of the myths that had to respect the human brain, although we still lack know too much to finish, because it is a universe that has not been explored and exploited in its entirety.

The brain as an organ essential to life, in my career as a midwife, is important in the field of early stimulation, as we get this new being, adapted to sudden changes in postnatal life, as well as most neural development and psychomotor skills, to enhance your senses at an early age. It is a subject to be treated very carefully, but that is of interest not only for my career but for all areas of health, and even beyond that.

Blog 5: About abortion

The abortion issue is the debate about the beginning of life and the right of women to decide about their fertility. The abortion was carried out to terminate an unwanted pregnancy. This process has the theme of motherhood as possible and sets in motion a possible paternity, understood both as a generation not only biological, but as an exercise in raising and showing of relationships for life.

In Chile, from September 1989 to repeal the provision that for about fifty years had allowed therapeutic abortion, all abortions performed in this country occur in secret because it is penalized without exception. In the years before 1930, when abortion was the status of public health problem and authorized in case of serious risk to life or health of women, the debate on the issue was addressed from the perspective of health public, as I said Dr. Lorena Binfa.

The abortion in my opinion is a sensitive issue to address because it is directly related to human rights by the life of this new being, as well as sexual and reproductive rights from the point of view of women. As to whether I agree with these practices, I say that depends on the circumstances, as in Chile any abortion is punishable by law, but do not consider cases in which if it might be necessary (therapeutic abortion), as example of a case here in Chile, where a pregnant lady anencephaly, for which he was not any chance of surviving outside the womb, had to wait 9 months and give birth to a son who will never hug her or him tell mom, she said, that pregnancy was a torment, torture. So I say, would agree to such situations, however in unwanted pregnancies, it would completely disagree and that is a life like any other, equally important, and even more so if you can not defend. Women should be empowered about their sexuality, without trampling on the rights of another person (the fetus), and have done with other areas of their lives expressing the valuations of their sexuality, motherhood, quality of life and capacity and right to self-determination as people in a society, and using the methods of protection (contraception) and later regret not having an unwanted pregnancy, and even having to reach these limits as abortion, risking the consequences and implement risk their lives and "getting rid of another."
